Choosing the appropriate lining for your curtains is just as crucial as picking the fabric. A well-chosen lining improves the practicality of your curtains while also improving the look of them. Whether you want more privacy, energy efficiency, or a touch of luxury, knowing your options will help you make the right decision for your home.
What Is Curtain Lining?
Curtain lining is an additional layer of fabric sewn onto the back of your curtain fabric. It provides structure, helps to control light/temperature and offers protection against wear and tear. The right lining can make a significant difference to the longevity and functionality of your curtains, ensuring they meet your specific requirements.
Types of Curtain Linings
To meet the diverse needs of our customers, we offer four main types of curtain linings, each with its own unique benefits.
Our cotton lining helps curtains and blinds drape smoother and is made of cotton and polyester sateen, with a smooth, luxury feel. Keep cool on warm nights thank to the cotton, stay warm on colder ones with the polyester bringing a degree of insulation.
Thermal linings on curtains and blinds can boost energy efficiency in your home. Our premium thermal option comprises 99% polyester and 1% aluminium, giving up to a 10 times greater energy saving than conventional lining. The aluminium coating reflects heat back into your room in winter and reflect irradiated heat out in warmer months.
Blackout Lining is the go-to choice for anyone seeking total darkness and complete privacy. Less than 2% of light gets through our special blackout lining. It is densely woven, and a fine coating is applied which block the tiny pores in the weave. The almond-ivory blackout lining provides a nice neutral colour for your curtains, and we only use a ‘Silky Soft’ range so your curtains can still flow within the pleats/folds whilst being supported and blacking out maximum light. Blackout blinds will also help keep your rooms warmer in winter, with our silky soft lining blocking the gaps between the threads of the main fabric, reducing the escape of insulation.
Interlined curtains and blinds have 3 layers – the main fabric and lining, plus an interlining sandwiched between the two. This provides added warmth and volume to your curtains, as well as reducing noise too. Enjoy more rounded and fuller pleats with interlining, enhancing the standout feature of your curtains. Due to the thickness of the 3 layers, we would not recommend interlining a triple peat curtain.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Lining
A number of elements must be taken into account when choosing the ideal lining to make sure it suits your demands.
One important factor to take into account is the room's purpose. Thermal lining works well in living areas to keep them warm and welcoming, while blackout lining is frequently the recommended option for bedrooms to guarantee sound sleep.
Your decision will also be influenced by the degree of light control that you need. It may be better to use standard or thermal lining if you wish to filter light instead of completely blocking it. Blackout lining is the best for total light exclusion.
Another critical component is energy efficiency. Thermal lining is a popular option for homes with large windows or in colder locations because it can drastically reduce heat loss.
The kind of fabric you select should go well with your lining. Lighter materials look well with standard or blackout linings for a crisp, uncomplicated appearance, while heavier textiles frequently benefit from interlining to produce an opulent, packed effect.
Last but not least, your personal taste in aesthetics matters. Interlining is perfect if you want to create a luxurious, soft look. Normal lining might be adequate for a more subtle look.

Common Questions About Curtain Linings
Many customers have questions about choosing the right lining. For instance, you may wonder if linings can be combined. The answer is yes—blackout lining can be paired with interlining for enhanced darkness and a luxurious feel.
Others may ask how linings affect the weight and drape of the curtains. While linings add weight, they also improve the way curtains hang, giving them a more structured appearance.
Finally, you may want to know which lining is best for seasonal needs. Thermal lining excels in winter by retaining warmth, while blackout lining is perfect for summer bedrooms to block out early morning light.
